The European Commission was deploying an EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) for the presidential election scheduled to take place on 17 November following an invitation from the Government of Sri Lanka. The EU EOM was to be led by John Cushnahan, former Member of the European Parliament. This was the fourth EU EOM deployed to Sri Lanka within five years and an additional contribution by the European Commission to supporting the peace process in Sri Lanka.
