José Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Commission, on 1 June 2005 decided to reshuffle the antitrust responsibilities of the Brussels regulator, handing fresh powers to Charlie McCreevy, the Commissioner for the Internal Market and Services. McCreevy was to decide in future all cases which owing to alleged conflicts of interest could not be handled by Neelie Kroes, the Commissioner for Competition.
