UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair, on 5 April 2005 formally asked the Queen to dissolve parliament and call an election for 5 May 2005. He thus launched what was set to be the most keenly contested British general election since 1992, urging the Labour Party to fight for 'every vote in every seat' against a resurgent Conservative Party.
