The European Commission has criticised the UK Government for failing to warn other Member States about the Sudan 1 food scare. Sudan 1 is a food dye, and has been linked to cancer. The dye is banned in the European Union, but was found in food products in the UK in February 2005. The source of the dye was a batch of contaminated chilli powder imported into the UK in 2002 and used in the production of Worcester Sauce which was then used to make a variety of other processed foods.
