After screening 183 proposals for EU laws pending at the European Parliament and Council, the European Commission decided to announce to scrap more than a third (68) of these proposals, 27 September 2005. Some of the proposals were deemed to be inconsistent with the objectives of the new Partnership for Growth and Jobs (Lisbon Strategy) or did not meet better regulation standards. Others were not advancing in the legislative process, or were simply outdated. This decision came as a part of the European Commission's much broader Better Regulation initiative to cut red-tape and over-regulation. As a next step, the Commission was planning to submit far-reaching proposals to simplify existing EU legislation in October 2005.
