The European Commission on 20 July 2005 decided that regional investment aid to Lignit Hodonín, the operator of the last lignite mine in the Czech Republic, was compatible with EU state aid rules. The aid of CZK155.5 million (€5 million) covered investment for opening new lignite deposits which would safeguard 350 direct and 150 indirect jobs. After having scrutinised the aid, the European Commission found it compatible with Community rules for regional state aid, given its positive effects on the economic development of the region concerned in terms of safeguarding employment and supporting investment in new mining technology. |
