The European Commission on 22 June 2005 approved a state aid measure by the UK government in favour of the company English Welsh Scottish Railway International Ltd (EWSI), provider of cross-Channel rail freight services. The aid served to compensate EWSI for infrastructure expenditure that other rail transport operators were not burdened with and was necessary to ensure the continued provision of rail freight services through the Channel Tunnel. The aid was therefore considered compatible with the EU state aid rules and promoted the broader European objective of developing a sustainable transport system with better performing rail services. |
