European leaders say Asian states must let their currencies rise against the US dollar to ease pressure on the euro. 'Asia should engage in greater currency flexibility,' said French foreign minister Herve Gaymard, after a meeting with his German counterpart Hans Eichel, 24 January 2005. They also asked the US to rein in its budget deficit to help arrest the dollar's decline.
