The 55 member States of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) met for its annual session at the Palais des Nations in Geneva on 22-25 February 2005. During its High-level Policy Segment, the Commission reviewed the economic developments in the UNECE region based on the Economic Survey of Europe, 2005 No. 1. The main topics taken up thereafter were 'Financing for development: Follow-up to the International Conference on Financing for Development in the UNECE Region' and 'Sustainable development in the UNECE region'.

The General Segment of the Commission discussed: UNECE's cooperation with OSCE; UNECE reform; Proposed programme budget for the biennium 2006-2007; Achieving the internationally agreed development goals, including those contained in the Millennium Declaration; Major policy issues of the UNECE and their impact on the UNECE programme of work; The work of the UNECE: achievements and constraints; Technical cooperation activities; Reports of the Bureau and of the Group of Experts on the Programme of Work
