The European Commission will bring a 14-month stand-off with Microsoft to an end in the coming days, in the latest round of the EU's biggest ever antitrust case.

Microsoft has been given until the end of Tuesday (31 May) to obey the European Commission's landmark anti-trust order or face daily fines of up to 5% of its global annual turnover, which could be $5 million (4m euro).

"We expect Microsoft to comply fully with the remedies set out in the ruling of March 2004," said Commission spokesman Jonathan Todd.

He said EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes was waiting for a final offer. Kroes met Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer in April and is reported to have agreed an end-date for negotiations which has remained secret until now.

A spokesman for Microsoft said the US software giant was aware of the Commission's deadline. Neither Microsoft or the Commission would confirm what progress still needed to be made.

Article reports that the European Commission was planning to bring the 14-month stand-off with Microsoft to an end by the end of May 2005.
