Immigration can help offset some of the side-effects of an ageing population in Europe but would be nowhere near sufficient to salvage struggling pension schemes, the United Nations said on 29 November 2004 following the publication of its 2004 world economic and social survey. Even with immigration projected to average 600,000 a year between 2000 and 2050, Europe's population is expected to decline by 96m in that period. |
