Poland's last big political scandal forced the resignation of Leszek Miller, the prime minister, in May 2004 and severely damaged the ruling Democratic Left Alliance (SLD), leaving Aleksander Kwasniewski, Poland's President, as the leading authority figure on the ex-Communist left. Now another nascent scandal is threatening Mr Kwasniewski's standing and may do yet more damage to the broken remnants of the SLD. It is also dragging in Poland's richest businessman, Jan Kulczyk.
