The consolidation of France's military shipbuilding industry moved closer on 25 October 2004 after the French defence minister announced plans to allow the state-owned DCN shipyard to merge with the naval activities of Thales, the part-privatised defence group. France has fallen behind Germany in consolidating its shipbuilding industry. Delays to the long-awaited DCN/Thales Naval merger have raised concerns about the planned creation of a Franco-German naval champion, similar to EADS in the aerospace sector.
