EU drops threat of action against UK

The European Commission has dropped the threat of taking action against the UK over its budget deficit as it agrees with the UK Chancellor's forecast that the deficit for 2004 will fall below the European Union's ceiling of 3% of gross domestic product.

However, the Commission decided on 19 May 2004 to begin proceedings against the Netherlands over its excessive budget deficit and Greece's budget is also being monitored.
