Mehmet Ali Talat, prime minister of the unrecognised Turkish Republic of northern Cyprus (and the Turkish Cypriot leader who negotiated and accepted the United Nations peace plan for Cyprus) called on the European Union, 14 April 2004, to suspend the island's accession to the EU, 1 May 2004, if Greek Cypriots postponed a referendum on the settlement.
