Summary:Directive 2004/113/EC - formally adopted by the Council of the European Union on 13 December 2004 - implementing the principle of equal treatment between men and women in the access to and supply of goods and services. Further information:The purpose of this Directive is to lay down a framework for tackling discrimination based on sex in access to and supply of goods and services, with a view to putting into effect in the Member States of the European Union (EU) theĀ principle of equal treatment between men and women. The Directive against all gender discrimination applied to goods and services offered to the public, regardless of the persons concerned and which are offered outside of the private and family spheres. It does not apply to either the content of media or advertising, or education. Equal treatment between women and men and non-discrimination on grounds of sex are fundamental principles of Community law. In itsĀ Social Policy Agenda of June 2000, the Commission announced its intention to present a proposal for a Directive to prohibit sex discrimination outside of the labour market. At a summit held in Nice that same year, the European Council called on the Commission to reinforce equality-related rights by acting on the promotion of gender equality in areas other than employment and professional life. A draft law was eventually tabled by the Commission on 5 November 2003 in response to the European Council's request. The European Parliament adopted a position on the initiative on 30 March 2004. The Council of the European Union adopted the Directive on 13 December 2004 following consultation with the Parliament. The Act was published in the Official Journal on 21 December 2004. |
