Over 400 people attended the industrial policy conference held by the Enterprise Directorate-General at the end of May 2004, demonstrating the keen interest felt by a wide range of stakeholders. This should not be surprising. Despite talk of a 'post-industrial society', manufacturing not only remains central to European economic activity, but the debate on its future is highly relevant to all sectors. The Communication adopted by the Commission in April, 'Fostering Structural Change: an industrial policy for an enlarged Europe', not only underlines the renewed importance of industrial policy, but renews the debate in a wider context.
