The European Commission adopted a Communication on 7 April 2004 defining its objectives and priorities for relations between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) in view of the 3rd Summit of Heads of State and Government of the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean, to be held in Guadalajara (Mexico) on 28 May 2004. The Summit should pave the way for substantial progress in two priorities areas: social cohesion and regional integration. Addressing the extraordinary high level of social exclusion throughout the region would contribute greatly to the consolidation of democratic institutions and to sustainable economic development. Further steps towards regional and sub-regional integration will accelerate economic growth, as well as facilitate further progress in the strategic bi-regional EU-LAC partnership. |
