The vital role that industry plays in European prosperity is often overlooked. Talk of a 'post-industrial society' or of a 'service economy' fails to recognise to what extent our economy continues to depend on the dynamism of its industrial base. The European Commission is looking at ways industrial policy can maintain and encourage that dynamic.
