EU accession nationals will be able to work legally in the UK and contribute to its economy, however tough new rules will prevent them accessing benefits for two years and possibly longer, Home Secretary David Blunkett announced 23 February 2004. UK Opposition parties hit out at the government measures devised to cope with a potential increase in migrants to the UK when the EU expands in May 2004.
