The award was announced in the European Commission's Communication on an EU strategy to reduce atmospheric emissions from seagoing ships - COM(2002)595 - and welcomed by the Council and Parliament in their 2003 Conclusions and Resolution on the strategy. The objective to give positive publicity for environmentally responsible shipping, specifically low-emission initiatives, and to disseminate best practice. Awards have no pecuniary value. The award is managed by the European Commission, in collaboration with EU shipping, port and shippers organizations and an environmental NGO. The first award will be given in 2004. |
