A EUROPEAN Commission official from the justice and home affairs department has been sent for trial on charges of renting sub-standard housing to illegal immigrants.

The official, described by the Belgian judicial system as Aloysius W., aged 51, was reported to have had nine properties in Brussels, from which he was receiving €15,000 per month in rent.

A prostitute was paying €1,000 per month for a small room. All nine houses were declared unfit for habitation. Police discovered 58 illegal immigrants, including children.

Last Friday (8 October) the Belgian judicial system ruled that there was a case to answer and the official should be sent for trial.

A Commission spokesman said that disciplinary action had been launched and suspended, pending the outcome of the Belgian court case.
