EU aims to pinpoint emergency phone calls

European Union legislation came into force on 24 July 2003 which could save 5,000 lives a year by identifying the location of callers telephoning emergency services. The initiative is known as 'e112' after the 112 emergency number that can be used throughout the EU. However, it is unlikely to be implemented swiftly because of the limited accuracy of current technology.
