The Italian Government is to press ahead with a judicial immunity bill that would almost certainly halt the trial in which Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian Prime Minister, is accused of corruption. If the immunity bill is passed, Mr Berlusconi could be free from the danger of having judgment pronounced while he chairs the six-month Presidency of the European Union which begins on 1 July 2003.
