Monti backs state outlay on telecoms in poor areas

In a letter sent to the French government in February 2003 the European Commissioner for Competition, Mario Monti, approved the investment of millions of euros of government money in mobile telephony and high-speed internet access for poorer regions. Mr Monti's action is likely to prompt governments of other Member States to invest state funds in the development of high-speed internet.
