CORDIS has launched a new service for science and society which draws together the range of opportunities for research under various thematic priorities of the Sixth Framework programme. The site is at http://www.cordis.lu/science-society and links also to the Commission's DG Research website “Science and Society in Europe” at http://europa.eu.int/comm/research/science-society/index_en.html. The Commission's site provides information on a range of issues such as ethics and the encouragement of young people, ethnic minorities and women to become involved with science. There is particular concern about the gender imbalance in science and the Commission has included steps in its Action Plan to redress this. Available through the site is information on networks of women scientists. A recent study has updated an earlier guide and produced the Directory of Networks of Women Scientists 2003 which provides details of more than 80 networks in the EU and other countries participating in the Sixth Framework Programme. The directory is also available at http://europa.eu.int/comm/research/science-society/women-science/nows/index_en.cfm?script=search as a database which is to be updated regularly. The database can be searched by the name of the network. Alternatively you can select by scientific discipline, country of headquarters of the network or geographic area - just one or a combination of criteria can be used. “Science” has been defined in the broadest way to include social sciences and humanities as well as pure science, engineering and technology.
