Mr Martin Cullen, Ireland's Minister for the Environment and Local Government, said on 24 February 2003, that landfill disposal of commercial packaging waste was no longer an option, following the signing of the Waste Management (Packaging) Regulations 2003, which were due to come into effect on 1 March 2003. The EU Directive on Packaging and Packing Waste required a 50 per cent recovery target to be reached by 2005. |
