Abstract: ‘Regions are trendy’. This headline taken from an article summarizing major results of the innovation trend chart annual report 20011 makes it clear that regions play a critical role in national innovation policy measures these days. Nevertheless, the regional dimension in science and technology policy is not a new phenomenon. Already during the late 1980s, policy-makers in Europe, but also in other spatial entities characterized by considerable regional imbalances, searched for new ways and policy tools to address inequalities and to reduce regional disparities in research, technological development and innovation. |
