BELGIUM'S improving water supply system has been given another boost thanks to a €75 million loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB).

The loan is part of a recent €250m accord between the EU lender and water-management company Aquafin - a beneficiary of loans worth €750 million since 1994.

The latest cash will fund new reservoirs, pumping stations and water treatment equipment. The EIB said the funding would improve water in the rivers Escaut and Meuse as well as the North Sea. The reduction in pollution in the North Sea is covered by an international treaty signed in 1985.
