GERHARD Schröder has opted not to bronze his skin under the scorching Italian sun this summer, and all because one of Silvio Berlusconi's ministers said German tourists are "hyper-nationalistic blondes who inhabit Italy's beaches in the summer".

A spokesman for the German chancellor announced the cancellation of his Italian holiday plans in protest at the remarks by Stefano Stefani, who holds the tourism portfolio in the Rome administration and belongs to the xenophobic Northern League (Lega Nord) party. Schröder will instead be staying in his home state of Hanover.
