Date: 11/09/03 ERKKI Liikanen, the telecoms commissioner, visits South Korea this week to learn how the country became the world's undisputed champion of fast internet access. The country tops the charts with around ten broadband users per 100 people. The average is less than one in the EU. Liikanen, who recently launched the EU's own broadband blueprint, will meet Korean Telecoms Minister Chin Dae-Je and Commerce, Industry and Energy Minister Wang Xudong to find out how to emulate this success. Later in his Far East tour, Liikanen travels to China to launch an ongoing 'dialogue' devoted to EU-China industrial policy issues. At the same time, the Finnish commissioner will discuss the launch of China's new system for checking and certifying products to ensure they meet agreed standards. |
