Date: 11/09/03 By Peter Chapman FRENCH carmaker Renault was handed top marks in European tests for the in-cabin safety of its brand new Scenic model - set to shunt hundreds of thousands of school children to classrooms every day. But the Scenic scored poorly in the pedestrian safety category, suggesting that safety of other road users - such as youngsters making their way to school on foot - is still less of a priority for carmakers. The car became the first small 'people carrier' to win a maximum five star rating in new updated crash tests designed to mimic the effects of a real-life collision. Max Mosley, chairman of Euro NCAP, the European Commission-backed body responsible for the safety tests, said: "The results for the Renault Scenic are particularly important as it sets the bench mark for this group of cars." |
