THE European Investment Bank has announced a €200 million loan deal to authorities in Castilla-La Mancha, central Spain, for financing a raft of small-scale infrastructure projects.

The loan will help finance urban regeneration schemes in parts of the region granted 'objective one' status - reserved for the EU's poorest areas.

Projects are likely to include construction of community centres, refurbishment of historic buildings, cultural facilities and hospitals, in what is the biggest-ever loan granted to the region by the Luxembourg-based EIB - owned by the EU's 15 member states.

The bank lent €39.6 billion in 2002, of which l5.4 billion went towards Spanish projects.

In a separate move, the EIB has agreed two €50 million loans in Belgium.

The cash injection is set to finance the construction of criminal courts in Liège and Mons.
