Date: 13/03/03 THE European Investment Bank (EIB) has granted Spanish authorities an emergency €150 million loan to help repair the harm to local economies worst hit by the Prestige oil spillage. The cash will go to Galicia, Asturias and Cantabria - the three regions whose coastlines bore the brunt of the tanker spillage last November. The Luxembourg-based EIB said the loan would be managed by three savings banks: the Caixa Galicia, Caixanova and Caja Cantabria. The banks will channel the funds to small companies to help them overcome the damage in sectors such as seafood and tourism. Environmental clean-up projects will also benefit from the cash. The EIB is the Union's 'in-house' bank which offers loans direct to the banking sector of member states.
