FRANCE and the UK have called for the European Union to take over the NATO-led peacekeeping operation in Bosnia "with a credible EU force" in early 2004.

The missions in Macedonia and Bosnia are seen by Britain and France, Europe's leading military powers, as part of the development of a European security and defence policy.

US President George W. Bush pledged during his 2000 electoral campaign to reduce the American presence in the Balkans. According to diplomats, 85% of the soldiers in Bosnia are already from Europe.
