Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has pledged to the European Commission that he will not pour illegal state cash into the collapsing car business of industrial giant Fiat.

Speaking at the weekend's World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Mario Monti said his fellow countryman has given him his "personal assurance" that any help the Italian state gives to Fiat would be "in strict compliance with EU state aid rules".

Meanwhile, the competition commissioner disappointed critics of the media power wielded by Berlusconi, who controls three of his country's private TV networks and, as prime minister, can hire and fire Italian state TV bosses.

Monti, who once failed to push through an EU directive on the issue while internal market commissioner, said media concentration law was firmly in the hands of member states.
