The UK Treasury is thought likely to refuse a request by Gibraltar that it be allowed to mint euro coins. Gibraltar has also asked for clarification of its status should the United Kingdom join the euro. The legal position is that it would become part of the single currency area when the UK joins. Whether it would be able to mint its own coins or have to accept UK-made coins would be a matter for discussion with the European Central Bank.
