France heads off sanctions and lifts embargo on British beef

France lifted its six-year embargo on the import of British beef on 2 October 2002. The embargo was introduced to prevent the spread of mad cow disease (BSE), but was maintained long after the European Commission ruled that British beef was safe to eat.
