New European rules ‘could force chemical groups overseas’

Leaders of the chemicals industry warned on 14 June 2002 that European chemical companies could move large parts of their research and manufacturing overseas if the European Commission does not water down planned new legislation. The Commission's proposals, due to be unveiled in Autumn 2002, could require testing of up to 30,000 compounds to assess their safety.
