Edmund Stoiber, the challenger for the post of German chancellor, warned on 16 May 2002 of the danger of excessive enlargement of the European Union and spelled out his strong opposition to Turkey becoming a full member. He said that if Turkey joined the EU there would be calls for Morocco and Tunisia to become members as well.
