Tariff exemptions ‘likely for some EU steelmakers’

A senior US official said on 30 May 2002 that some European Union steelmakers were likely to be granted exemptions from controversial US import tariffs before the 18 June 2002 deadline. Such a move could make it less likely that the EU would go ahead with retaliation against the US before a World Trade Organisation dispute panel rules on the case in 2003.
