More than 100 people were rescued from a sinking boat by an oil tanker, the MT Salamis, on the Mediterranean Sea on 5 August 2023 but Malta's government denied the right to land on the island despite concerns that some were in need of medical attention. European Commissioner Cecilia Malmström, in her statement, acknowledged the refugee challenge but said “the Commission urges Maltese authorities to let these persons disembark as soon as possible.
