The EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, met with Egypt's deposed President, Mohammed Morsi, on 30 July 2013.

Ashton, who has emerged as one of the only figures accepted by both sides in Egypt as mediator, revealed little about what she called a 'friendly, open and very frank' two-hour conversation.

In a possible sign of progress, a spokesman for Ashton said EU envoy Bernadino León would travel to Cairo to 'continue the work.'
