Europa Newsletter

On the 18th November Europa launched a fortnightly newsletter at http://europa.eu.int/newsletter/current/index_en.htm. The next one will appear on 2nd December and interested parties can subscribe to receive it regularly by e-mail or simply consult it online. In view of the size of Europa and the upcoming expansion due to enlargement, the newsletter aims to promote forthcoming events and activities such as Internet chats and debates as well as highlight topical issues, new developments and the latest key publications.

European Parliament site prepares for enlargement

The main pages of the European Parliament's web site at http://www.europarl.eu.int are now available not just in the existing official languages but also in the languages of the applicant countries. At a lower level however the languages revert to English. Expanding Europa to make available the existing content in additional language versions is an unenviable task which will not be completed overnight!

EU Maps

A new EU map is available online at http://europa.eu.int/abc/maps/index_en.htm

As well as showing the broad picture with existing member states and applicant countries clearly distinguished, it is possible to select either one of the current member states or an applicant country from a dropdown menu to home in on a larger scale map of that area. This generates the further option of focussing in on a specific region. Though the map is the copyright of the European Commission reproduction is authorised. Printed versions can be purchased from sales agents for €15.

RAPID added to Justis.com

From September Context has added the RAPID press releases database from the European Commission to its Justis.com Internet service. The service is updated twice monthly and is available free of charge to Justis CELEX subscribers. For those who use Justis.com CELEX, access is automatically included. CD-ROM subscribers to Justis 5 CELEX can register for free access either by e-mailing the Sales Team at sales@context.co.uk or by telephoning +44-(0)20-7284-8080. For those who do not subscribe to Justis CELEX, the RAPID annual web service is available at a charge of £100 plus VAT. While it may be nice to have access to the additional full text explanatory material in RAPID while searching CELEX - provided it is free of charge - it is hard to see why anyone would choose to subscribe to a paying service which is updated only twice monthly instead of using the free service updated daily from the Commission. Possible justifications might have been the search interface or accessibility, but although the new service uses Context's own interface the upgraded RAPID search template works quite satisfactorily and there is not usually any difficulty connecting to the database. However anyone who would like further information should visit http://www.justis.com/database.html/
