A conservative revolt against the leadership of Angela Merkel in Germany’s ruling Christian Democratic Union burst into the open over the weekend of 11-12 September 2010 with public criticism of the chancellor’s centrist political stance.

Several prominent members of the CDU and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union, warned of a leftward drift in the leadership, after a leading conservative member of the CDU executive Erika Steinbach announced that she would quit the party’s ruling body.
