Abstract:

The International Survey of Family Law provides an annual review of developments in family law across the world. The 2002 edition contains 29 articles from around the world and, as usual, every continent is represented. Ethiopia and Uganda appear for the first time in the survey and the contribution on Pakistan is the first for many years.

The work opens with a general annual review of the developments in family law, including a brief review of the Three Hague Conventions affecting children: the Abduction Convention; the Intercountry Adoption Convention; and the Protection of Children Convention. The discussion then moves on to the Brussels II Regulation before a commentary upon the Jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights concludes the opening section.

There then follows a number of contributions from a wide selection of countries that have seen important developments in family law. These include the new child law in Austria, the start of child welfare reform in Bulgaria; and the 2001 registered partnership act in Germany. Several topical issues are also discussed such as the question of same sex couples with reference to the Netherlands and Canada; the case of the conjoined twins in the United Kingdom; the effects of bioethics on family law in Argentina and Muslim family laws in Pakistan.

The volume is published on behalf of The International Society of Family Law and will interest teachers, students, judges and practising lawyers in Family law.
