THE European Investment Bank has agreed to invest more than €60 million in a huge new cement works in Algeria.

The Luxembourg-based bank will lend Egyptian firm Orascom Construction Industries €55 million and will take a €6 million stake in the plant, to be sited 240 kilometres south-west of Algiers.

It said the plant - scheduled for commissioning by 2004 - will help meet demand for cement and concrete for housing construction, and create around 400 highly skilled local jobs.
