Chris Patten, the external relations commissioner, has firmly rebutted US claims that the EU is not giving sufficient aid to Afghanistan.

He was responding to remarks by American Assistant Secretary of State Arthur Dewey that the Union had delivered just 20,000 tonnes of food to the beleaugured Afghans over the past 12 months, compared to 256,000 tonnes by the US.

'Some international agencies have claimed that Europe has not been generous enough,' Patten told MEPs. 'But I can speak for the European Commission, and we have more than doubled humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan this year, from €25 million initially earmarked at the beginning of this year to €60 million.'
