Date: 12/09/02 SOCIALIST MEPS have joined the growing clamour for an investigation into alleged war crimes in Afghanistan. The Party of European Socialists (PES) says it is concerned about the treatment of Afghan prisoners of war and has called for international conventions to be respected. The group's vice president, Dutch member Max van den Berg, said: 'The group insists on a full investigation into the recent allegations of human rights violations in the north of Afghanistan where mass graves of war prisoners were found. 'We are asking that an inquiry be undertaken into these allegations, under the auspices of the United Nations. 'If these allegations are confirmed, those responsible must be brought to justice.'
