The European Commission's proposed tough new rules to clamp down on traffickers are expected to get the go-ahead from the Council of Ministers later this year.

But MEPs, who have been asked to give their formal opinion on the issue, think the proposals go too far.

Dutch member Lousewies van der Laan said the plans would treat hard and soft drugs exactly the same.

The Netherlands might have been expected to veto the proposals but, with an election in May, Dutch Justice Minister Benk Korthals wanted to appear 'tough on drugs', claimed van der Laan.

EU justice ministers are being urged to think twice before enforcing sweeping anti-drugs laws.
